TUCSON — FC Tucson Women knocked off San Diego SeaLions in dramatic fashion on Saturday night, using an 87th-minute goal from Mariel Gutierrez to secure a 2-1 win.
Gutierrez registered a brace in Tucson’s win, scoring both of the team’s goals to lift it to a second win in as many days after its 3-0 win over SD Parceiros Ladies on Friday.
Saturday's winning goal came on the break. Gutierrez raced the down the right wing on a counterattack, dribbling unmarked deep into the San Diego box. SeaLions’ goalkeeper Parker Rytz came charging out of the goal and got a piece of Gutierrez’s shot but the ball deflected into the air and bounced across the line and into the net.
Gutierrez got the scoring started in the 39th minute when she finished a nice build-up move by placing a low shot into the corner of the goal. She was set up by Jessica Raybe, who got to a cross before it went out of bounds and headed the ball back into danger, allowing Gutierrez to get her shot away.
It didn’t take long for San Diego to respond. In the 44th minute, SeaLions' midfielder Elie Magracia found forward Cori Deason, who beat Tucson keeper Lainey Burdett with a well-placed shot from distance.
FC Tucson (2-1-0) defended a couple of other SeaLions' chances early in the game. In the 6th minute, Burdett denied San Diego forward Riley Houle from close range, using both hands to deflect the ball away. Three minutes later, SeaLions’ midfielder Rhiann Holman had Burdett beat but Tucson defender Samantha Falasco made a goal-line clearance.
FC Tucson forward Tatianna Lizarraga came close to bagging a couple goals of her but was twice denied by Rytz from the edge of the six-yard box.
FC Tucson Women will resume its WPSL season at home next Friday against Phoenix Del Sol at Kino North Stadium. The match will kick off at 5:30 p.m. and tickets can be purchased at www.fctucson.com.
