TUCSON (June 17, 2018) – Thanks to a late equalizer from forward Damian German, FC Tucson salvaged a 1-1 draw with first-place Colorado Rapids U23 on Sunday night at Kino North Stadium.
Two days after a 4-2 defeat on the road at Albuquerque Sol FC, FC Tucson picked up a key point at home in comeback fashion.
Down 1-0 in the 78th minute, Tucson finally found a breakthrough. Midfielder Daisuke Takanaka forced his way past a Colorado defender near the right edge of the box to get into space near the end-line. Takanaka then fired a low pass back across the middle, finding German open near the top of the six-yard box. On his first touch, German directed a clinical finish into the bottom left corner of the goal and past the diving effort of Rapids’ goalkeeper Will Pulisic.
Colorado defender Quentin Pearson opened the scoring in the 64th minute but Tucson had been applying most of the pressure leading up to the game-tying score
German almost found the back of the net in the 50th minute when he blasted a shot just wide of the goal. In the 60th minute, three straight Tucson shots were blocked by Colorado defenders before the ball was cleared. Tucson midfielder AJ Valenzuela got his head on a corner kick but sent the ball just over the crossbar in the 74th minute before midfielder Angel Heredia had a free kick from the edge of the box sail wide of the far post.
German’s equalizer ensured that Tucson stayed in second place in the PDL Mountain Division and four points back of Colorado Rapids U23. The teams will meet again in Colorado on July 11.
FC Tucson will return to the pitch on Tuesday, July 3 to face Albuquerque Sol FC, the club’s final home game of the regular season. The match will kick off at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are available online at www.fctucson.com.
