2020 Visit Tucson Sun Cup Participants and Dates Set

TUCSON (December 20, 2019) —FC Tucson in partnership with Phoenix Rising Football Club announced today the dates and participants for MLS Preseason in Arizona and the 2020 Visit Tucson Sun Cup at Kino Sports Complex in Tucson. Preseason training for certain clubs will begin January 17. The 2020 Sun Cup will take place from February 15-22.

Sporting KC, Real Salt Lake, New York Red Bulls, Houston Dynamo, FC Cincinnati, and Columbus Crew will all spend part of their preseason in Arizona.

The 2020 Visit Tucson Sun Cup at Kino Sports Complex in Tucson will consist of Sporting KC, Real Salt Lake, New York Red Bulls, Houston Dynamo, Columbus Crew, and Phoenix Rising FC.

“Arizona has been a premier preseason destination for top MLS clubs since 2012 and we’re excited to host another exciting crop of teams ahead of the 2020 regular season,” said Phoenix Rising GM Bobby Dulle. “MLS preseason is a great opportunity for soccer fans young and old to see some of the best soccer players in the country in person. FC Tucson to Face Off Against Toronto FC II in 2020 Home Opener

TUCSON, Ariz. (Dec 17, 2019) —USL League One announced today the home openers for the 2020 regular season, with 12 teams set to open a 28-game schedule that will run from March 27-October 4 before the League One Playoffs kick off the weekend of October 10.

FC Tucson’s home opener will be against Toronto FC II on Saturday, March 28 that Kino North Stadium. It will be the final match of opening week.

FC Tucson and Head Coach Darren Sawatzky Part Ways

TUCSON (November 6th, 2019) — FC Tucson announced today that the club and head coach Darren Sawatzky are mutually parting ways. Sawatzky will become the new head coach for USL League One side Richmond Kickers FC.

“We thank Darren for his efforts in our inaugural pro season and wish him the best of luck in Richmond,” said Phoenix Rising General Manager Bobby Dulle.

In his lone year with the club, Sawatzky went 8-11-9, good for 33 points.

FC Tucson Forward Jordan Jones Named to the USL League One All-League Second Team

TUCSON, Ariz. (Oct 16, 2019) — FC Tucson forward Jordan Jones was named to the USL League One All-League Second Team today the league announced today.

Jones tied for third in the league and first on the club with ten goals in 22 appearances. He finished with a goal conversion rate of 22.7% and recorded 18 created chances.

The California native ranks fourth all-time in club history with ten goals in one season. Jones was also named to the USL League One Team of the Week seven times this season.

FC Tucson Falls to North Texas SC in Season Finale

TUCSON, Ariz. (October 4, 2019) — FC Tucson concluded its first professional season with a 2019 finale at Kino North Stadium, a 3-1 loss to North Texas FC. The club finishes the season with a 5-4-5 record at home and an 8-11-9 record overall. FC Tucson's final position in the standings is 8th place.

Last week, Jones scored a goal in each of FC Tucson’s matches to push his goal total to nine on the season. He also completed 18 of 29 passes and recorded one key pass during the two-match span.

Jones currently leads the club in goals scored (9) and tied for second on the team with three assists.

FC Tucson will be back in action on Friday, October 3rd when the club plays host to North Texas SC.

FC Tucson Earns a Point Against Forward Madison

WHAT TO KNOW

Already out of the playoff race, FC Tucson gave Forward Madison FC all it could handle in a tough 1-1 draw at Kino North Stadium. The home side recorded its first chance within the first ten minutes of play.

Making his professional debut, 17-year-old forward Ilijah Paul showed off some fancy dribbling moves to bypass two Madison defenders for a 1v1 matchup with the keeper. But Madison goalkeeper Bryan Sylvestre was able to make a last-minute save to keep the match scoreless.

But it wouldn’t take FC Tucson long to find its opening goal.

In the 31st minute, defender José Terrón seized a rebound shot off the post and sent the ball inside the box to Jordan Jones, who headed the ball into the back of the net for his ninth goal of the season. This marks the second consecutive match where Jones has scored at least one goal.

But Forward Madison wouldn’t trail for long. During first-half stoppage time, Madison was awarded a chance from the spot following a hard foul called inside of Tucson’s box.

Forward Don Smart delivered from the spot to score the equalizer for the away side as they entered the locker room.

Both sides exchanged chances in the second half in hopes of scoring the game-winning goal. In the opening minutes of the second half, goalkeeper Carlos Merancio made a spectacular point-blank save to keep the away side off the board.

FC Tucson’s best chance to score the game-winner came in the 73rd minute of play. Midfielder Karsten Hanlin sent a beautiful volley to the feet of Devyn Jambga in stride. Jambga displayed a good first touch and sent a rocket to the opposing team’s goal but barely missed the far post.

Despite their attempts, both sides were unable to break the dead-locked score in the final minutes.

FC Tucson will play in their final match of the 2019 USL League One season next Friday when the club hosts North Texas SC. North Texas has already clinched the USL League One regular-season title and currently sit in first place with a record of 16-6-5 and 53 points.
